Emirates Internet and Multimedia (EIM) today announced the launch of an Arabic language Internet search engine that also supports other languages, based on Compaq's revolutionary AltaVista, which is set to become one of the largest search tool on the World Wide Web. The new UAE-based search tool is to be brand-named ARABVISTA, and can be located at: www.arabvista.com. It will provide unique and comprehensive Internet search capabilities to Arabic speaking Internet users. "This search solution is highly advanced, and will provide superior Internet search facilities to any existing solutions found on the Internet, including the current major players," said Maroua Naim, general manager for Emirates Internet and Multimedia (EIM).

With some 220 million Arabic speakers world-wide, the potential of Arabic language Internet solutions is immense, and brings a new audience into the Internet age. The drive towards e-commerce in the UAE and elsewhere in the Middle East region is creating a demand for a wide range of Internet services: "A search engine is usually the first thing that people go to when they're using the Web," said Joseph Hanania, general manager, Gulf and Levant Region, Compaq Middle East, Mediterranean and Africa (MEMA). "The sheer scale of information available on the Internet means that a smart, fast search tool is a must. ARABVISTA will bring that capability to Arabic speakers in the world and will, I believe, be a key tool in the movement to grow the Arabic Internet."

In 1993 Glenn Anderson started development on what was then called MailShare, which was available as freeware. In 1995 MailShare was purchased by Apple Computer and renamed to Apple Internet Mail Server. Version 1.0 to 1.2 were released under that name. In 1997 Apple Internet Mail Server was purchased by Qualcomm and renamed to Eudora Internet Mail Server. Version 1.3 was released as freeware by Qualcomm. Versions 2.0 to 3.0 were released by Qualcomm as a commercial product. In 2001 Qualcomm licensed EIMS back to Glenn Anderson, who has released version 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3. As of January 2021, the latest version is 3.3.9 of 2 March 2009, and the payment processor is Kagi that went out of business on 31 July 2016 (making it impossible to buy a licence), suggesting that the project might have become abandoned. The server software also handles the ACAP and LDAP services.
