What is CERN Internet eXchange Point?

CIXP has been providing a peering facility for western Switzerland and France since 1996; one of the first "carrier neutral" Internet Exchange Points in the world.

In 1989 the first pan-European internet backbone was established through CERN, and in 1990 the first T1 connection to NSFnet in the USA was made. 

Now, CIXP is the main Internet eXchange in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, with connections to most of the major national and international Internet Service Providers. It also hosts caches for Content Delivery Networks, and connects to GEANT, the pan-European research and education network, as well as the Lyonix Internet eXchange.

With a further presence at two Equinix datacenters in Geneva that offer hosting services, CIXP customers have multiple ways of satisfying their interconnection and business requirements.
