 What is Arlington Regional Master Naturalist?

The Arlington Regional Master Naturalist (ARMN) chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program was formed in 2008. Our members combine a love for the natural environment with a commitment to service in our local communities through environmental education and outreach, stewardship, and citizen science.ARMN volunteers support a wide range of service projects throughout Northern Virginia. In addition to our state sponsors, ARMN works with many local partners, which are identified in Where We Volunteer.ARMN has also been honored for its members’ work in the community. These include the National Park Service’s George and Helen Hartzog Award for an Outstanding Volunteer Group (2012); the Bill Thomas Outstanding Park Service Volunteer Award from the Arlington County Parks and Recreation Commission (2014); two awards for collaborating on Arlington County’s Department of Parks and Recreation’s restoration of the Barcroft Magnolia Bog as a model of natural resource management in an urban area:  an Achievement Award from the Virginia Association of Counties, and  the Best New Environmental Sustainability Award from the Virginia Recreation and Park Society 2016; and the A. Willis Robertson Award from the Virginia Chapter of The Wildlife Society for assisting with public outreach and education efforts related to white-tailed deer 2021.ARMN volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have advanced degrees in natural sciences or have worked in related fields while others have little or no previous formal training in these areas. Ages of our volunteers range from as young as 16 to retirees. Parents are attracted to the program to sustain environmental education for their children and the community. Graduates all have a passion to share their new understanding of the natural world in support of our local natural environment.
