The HGEA, a 501(c)(5), represents about 43,000 members and began in 1934 in Honolulu.In April 2015, the HGEA negotiated a new contract with the state of Hawaii, which the HGEA had halted because other unions had received better compensation proposals than the HGEA's original proposal.
