What is De-MultipleXer?

A De-multiplexer is a combinational circuit that has only 1 input line and 2N output lines. Simply, the multiplexer is a single-input and multi-output combinational circuit. The information is received from the single input lines and directed to the output line. On the basis of the values of the selection lines, the input will be connected to one of these outputs. De-multiplexer is opposite to the multiplexer. Unlike encoder and decoder, there are n selection lines and 2n outputs. So, there is a total of 2n possible combinations of inputs. De-multiplexer is also treated as De-mux.

De-Multiplexer is a combinational circuit that performs the reverse operation of Multiplexer. It has single input, ‘n’ selection lines and maximum of 2n outputs. The input will be connected to one of these outputs based on the values of selection lines. Since there are ‘n’ selection lines, there will be 2n possible combinations of zeros and ones. So, each combination can select only one output. De-Multiplexer is also called as De-Mux. The data distributor, known more commonly as a Demultiplexer or “Demux” for short, is the exact opposite of the Multiplexer we saw in the previous tutorial.

The demultiplexer takes one single input data line and then switches it to any one of a number of individual output lines one at a time. The demultiplexer converts a serial data signal at the input to a parallel data at its output lines as shown below.
